WHITANIA: Several clinical studies and research carried out on animals seem to support the use of Ashwagandha in the treatment of anxiety, neurological and cognitive disorders, and inflammation. The biological and pharmacological effects of Ashwagandha are attributable to the steroid lactones (withanolides) contained in it. Ashwagandha has adaptogenic (anti-stress), anti-inflammatory, immunomodulating, antioxidant and hematopoietic properties and also exerts, through not fully understood mechanisms of action, effects on the endocrine system, on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and on the central nervous system. At the base of the adaptogenic properties there seems to be an inhibition of the up-regulation of dopaminergic receptors at the level of the striatum induced by stress. As far as anxiolytic activity is concerned, the efficacy seems to be explained by the reported reduction of catecholamines, acetylcholine and an increase in serotonin and histamine in the body, but further studies are underway to define the anxiolytic mechanism of the plant. The nootropic effect of Withania (ability to promote brain mechanisms associated with mental abilities) is also very interesting; Ayurvedic medicine has always indicated it as an agent that favors learning and memory recovery. That said, preliminary studies on Withania would confirm its ability to counteract cognitive deficits associated with age, chronic diseases and behavioral disorders.

BACOPA: is a plant studied in depth by numerous research groups around the world. In India it is said that this plant helps in all mental health problems because it can “open the door to full knowledge” 1. Neuroprotective properties. Bacopa prevents neuronal degeneration and significantly improves the acquisition and maintenance of memories and concepts, helping the hippocampus. The mechanisms of action studied in this regard are linked to the fact that: a) it increases the synthesis of acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter essential for memory. B) it promotes neurogenesis (the formation of new neurons), through the increase of neurotropic factors BDNF and NGF. Bacosides A and B have antioxidant properties by increasing protein synthesis in the hippocampus. 2. Properties on CNS inflammation. Bacopa inhibits the release of inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 from microglial cells and inhibits the enzymes associated with inflammation (caspase 1 and 3, and the matrix metalloproteinase) in the brain. Therefore, Bacopa can limit inflammation in the central nervous system and offers a promising source of new therapies for the treatment of many CNS disorders; 3. Anxiolytic properties. A study compares Bacopa to Lorazepam, a known benzodiazepine, demonstrating the dose-dependent effect with the same efficacy without motor deficits and amnesia; 4. Antidepressant properties. It has been shown, in in vivo studies, that Bacopa causes an upregulation of the serotonin transporter (SERT) and an increase in brain neurotrophic factor (BDNF). The importance of the effect of BDNF is supported by studies showing how this neurotropic factor increases the growth and survival of dendrites and axons; 5. Antistress properties. Bacopa modulates the expression of Hsp70, the activity of SOD (superoxide dismutase) and cytochrome P450, molecules that prepare the brain to react under stressful conditions; 6. Antioxidant property. This property was evaluated on the increase in life expectancy in in vivo studies, with the mechanism of action linked to the expression of the HSP gene family; 7. Properties for epilepsy. It can be used to enhance the effect of drugs prescribed to epilepsy sufferers, as well as children and adults with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Many studies also show that the effectiveness of the total Bacopa extract (infusion) is comparable to the extract of pure alkaloids and much higher than the single Bacoside A extract. For this reason we have chosen to encapsulate the Bacopa powder containing the phytocomplex.
